Dysco’s Guide to SIDEWAVE Part II
Posted on Feb 2, 2011 / Posted by Dylan Maguire /
If any of you are unsure which bands from SOUNDWAVE’S SIDEWAVE gigs you should be hanging out to see, consider my guide your ultimate ‘Almanac’ of SIDEWAVE information, quite possibly destined for historical brilliance.
And on that note, I present to you, Dysco’s Guide to SIDEWAVE – Part II.
MAYDAY PARADE + BREATHE CAROLINA + EVERY AVENUE
Tuesday 1st March – Sydney – The Forum – All ages
Thursday 3rd March – Melbourne – The HiFi Bar – 18+ (sucked in, kids)
Mayday Parade are that unique beast. The sum of the parts itself would be a great sound, but these guys have the certain ju nu se qua where the pool of talent comes together to make a raging stormy ocean of energy. These guys haven’t come our way for a few years now, so you have absolutely no excuse. Catch this Sidewave or spend the rest of the year making up excuses as to why you missed it – you’ve been warned. These gents are playing with Breathe Carolina and Every Avenue in a frenzy of poppy hooks.
NEW FOUND GLORY + LESS THAN JAKE + BAYSIDE (Adelaide Only)
Mon 28th Feb – Melbourne – Billboard – 18+
Sun 6th March – Adelaide – HQ – 18+
NEW FOUND GLORY, have been around for over a decade, and much like their other pop-punk genre-mates they have quietly built up quite the cult following. They fuck shit up live too – their last Australian tour was described as follows. “As the night ended, messy haired and sweat slicked bodies piled out back onto the streets. New Found Glory, once again, proved to everyone that pop punk is definitely not dead.” – Faster Louder.
SOUNDWAVE is bringing a lot of punk bands out this year, so selecting your favourite to go and catch the SIDEWAVE is going to be a difficult proposition, (although, you could always go see all of them). If you have to make a choice though, NFG are certainly up there with the best and be sure to check out LESS THAN JAKE and BAYSIDE, opening the show. (Bayside is in Adelaide only.)
HIGH ON FIRE + TRASH TALK + KYLSEA
Tues 1st March – Brisbane – HiFi Bar 18+
Wed 2nd March – Melbourne – Gershwin Room 18+
I don’t like to toss around the phrase Old School too much. I save Olde Schoole for semi-annual usage, because when I say it, I want it to mean something. HIGH ON FIRE, my friends, are Olde School. Sludgey, fucking, thrashy, fucking, riffy, Olde School. These guys are direct descendants from the gene pool that also features bands from SLAYER to DYSTOPIA and they’re not fucking around.
Enter this show at your own risk – metal virgins are warned; you will be violently and forcefully fucked in the ass (hopefully metaphorically…maybe stay out of the pit just in case though, guys).
Get yourself ready for anything, with show openers, TRASH TALK and KYLSEA.
The final for part II of this concert-information opus, brings me to masked metal icons, SLIPKNOT. No, they’re not a late addition to the Soundwave bill, but two “slipknotters” are bringing their respective brand of side-project to Soundwave, and they are Corey Taylor’s STONE SOUR and Joey Jordison’s MURDERDOLLS.
STONESOUR + COHEED & CAMBRIA + SEVENDUST + 36 CRAZY FISTS
Mon 28th February – Sydney – Big Top, Luna Park – All Ages
Wed 2nd March – Melbourne – Festival Hall – All Ages
The Stone released a new album last year and I think they sound better than ever. Metal-as-anything riffs, percussion to break your ankles if you stand too close to the stage, and Corey Taylor up front (for the unitiated, Stone Sour actually preceded Slipknot by about five years). Am I the only one who thinks this years Soundwave line-up is the best fucking ever?
Don’t forget they’re also playing with Sevendust and 36 Crazyfists.
MURDERDOLLS + MONSTER MAGNET + DOMMIN
Tues 1st March - Sydney – Big Top, Luna Park – All Ages
ROB ZOMBIE + MURDERDOLLS + MONSTER MAGNET + DOMMIN
Thurs 3rd March – Melbourne – Festival Hall – All Ages
In a sea of SLIPKNOT spin-offs, MURDERDOLLS consistently keep their head above water. Maybe its the fact they don’t take themselves too seriously. Maybe its the fact that Wednesday, is a lot more talented than you might give him credit for. Maybe it’s just that Joey Jordison is one of the greatest drummers who ever lived. Either way, I saw MURDERDOLLS (against my will) last time they were here in Australia, and I loved every minute of it.
Be sure to check out DOMMIN, who are opening these shows, plus the coolest of cats, Dave Wyndorf’s MONSTER MAGNET and last but not least, Rob Zombie’s… ROB ZOMBIE.
So kids, get your tickets from you usual outlet, but don’t trust the fat scalper in the Ed Hardy cap, selling ‘bargains’ outside the venues, on the night. Only a complete fucking ‘tard would be selling tickets at bargain basement prices, to what equates to Christ’s crucifixion on sheer entertainment value.
Stay tuned for part III and hey, you’re welcome.
