A Guide to SOUNDWAVE FESTIVAL’S SIDEWAVE by DYSCO MacDADDY – Part I
Posted on Jan 18, 2011 / Posted by Dylan Maguire /
Well, my bank balance is $12 in debit and I have a sick excitement in my stomach bordering on nausea. Either my loan shark has paid a visit, or the summer festival season is rolling around again. The hottest festival this summer is Soundwave, and this year more bands than ever are busting sideshows, or ‘sidewaves’ for the un-initiated. Here is the KR wrap up of the most poppin’ fresh fuckin’ acts to check out this year.
I’m writing this guide in parts or ‘chapters’ as I am currently in lock down, at a seedy motel, somewhere rural. That’s all I can say, in fact, that’s probably too much and any minute, I’ll be in the backseat of a sleek black Federal Government -issue limo, hightailing it with my dapper, yet soulless ‘men-in’black’, to my next hideout.
SLASH + TAKING DAWN + COHEED & CAMBRIA
WED 2nd MARCH @BRISBANE, THE TIVOLI – 18+
I remember watching Empire Records for the first time. In a sea of dialogue that didn’t ring true, I remember one moment for me especially smacked of bullshit. When asked who his favourite leading man is, the ranga chump replies “Axl”.
Come the fuck on. Axl?! Seriously?! Anybody who is anybody knows Axl is a whacked out old clown, and the sales of Chinese Democracy alone tell the tale of how talented the “Oral Sex” man is.
Everybody knows SLASH made GnR what they were. Sweet Child Of Mine? Does anybody seriously remember anything but Slash’s oh-so-sweet fucking solo? Come on people. Having just read his autobiography I can confirm that Slash is a rock god, and seeing this man perform should be high on the list of any serious rock and roll fan. If you need any further prompting, Time Magazine, placed Slash, second only to Jimi Hendrix, amongst the greatest guitarists of all time. SECOND ONLY TO JIMI, PEOPLE!
Go see Slash. For the love of fucking god.
I must admit, COHEED AND CAMBRIA, are a pet love of mine. I don’t know if its that sweet sweet falsetto, the bordering on psychopathic gayness, concept-shit that somehow manages to stay relevant, or just the fact that they sound really good. But Coheed and Cambria have become popular, stayed popular, and its mainly due to the fact that they play good tunes and they make sweet albums.
TAKING DAWN are the best band to come out of Vegas since….fine, fuck it, I love the fucking KILLERS. Sue me, people! Anyway, Taking Dawn, ROCK HARD, they don’t give a shit who you are, there is no mandatory koi fish on the Taking Dawn arm here, people. Just straight fucking rock. This show is going to kick…assssss….
BRING ME THE HORIZON + THE AMITY AFFLICTION + ASKING ALEXANDRIA
SYDNEY: Tues 1st March @ UNSW Roundhouse – All Ages
MELB: Wed 2nd March @ HIFI Bar – 18+
Everybody has an opinion on ‘the scene’. Cookie-cutter style, identical scene kids, sit around debating how nobody else ‘gets’ it quite like they do. These full-sleeved mopesters are cannibalisticly chewed up and spit out at the bottom of the roadie industry, whilst the rest of us take solace in the fact that our youthful indiscretions may have left us drug addled and unable to commit to a lasting relationship – but at least our earlobes arent hanging around our neck like Borat’s “sleeve of wizard” vagine.
Anyway, the point is, one thing everybody seems to agree on is they love BRING ME THE HORIZON. This is going to be a big show. They’re appearing with THE AMITY AFFLICTION and ASKING ALEXANDRIA, so why not dye your hair black, don some really tight black jeans and rock the heck out with these three angst-ridden, 21st Century emot-icons. Get it? Yea, lame, I know.
In the equally lame words of ‘T-2′, I’ll be back.
