Ann Ponders the Latest BFMV Release; Fever…

I can’t lie here, this is one of the hardest reviews I’ve written, to date. I’ve been trying to come up with diplomatic ways to express my feelings for Fever, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE’S latest release, but have deleted roughly seven versions of it. So tonight, I will be as honest as I can and give you the ‘LD’ on ‘BFMV.‘
The first track, Your Betrayal, opens with a ‘total metal’ 1:20 second intro and chugs into a rockin’ track that is highly enjoyable. From there though, is where I begin to lose interest. The reason? Put simply, there is just too much going on.
Maybe BFMV are desperate to dispel the ‘emo’ tag that has plagued them since their inception. (Quite possibly due to their ghey name.) Or maybe they just like using forty-five thousand tracks on each song, I don’t know. Bob Rock would call this approach to recording “uncool dynamics” but unfortunately, Bob wasn’t available to review this album.
Sure, there are the obligatory power ballads, such as, Bittersweet Memories, filled with tales of love lost, through death or otherwise, which will surely get the girls singing along, with their Vodka Cruisers held high, but the rockin’ tracks just seem to rock a little too much.
When I say it rocks too much, what I mean is, there are snippets of songs that simultaneously have screaming, chunky chords, splashing cymbals and harmonised guitar solos all going at once! This is what I mean and what Bob means, if I can speak for Bob on his behalf here, without ever having spoken to him or even having a quote from him.
Let’s move onto the lyrics; the lyrical content of this album is so explicit and detailed, one could ask whether women actually wrote them. Personally, I like a guy who can delve as deep as this and remain heterosexual, but I digress…
If you’re looking for a fresh new sound from BFMV, you won’t find it on Fever. But, despite being more of the same, it does have some shiny nuggets of rockin’ even if it does rock a little too much.
Do I hate Fever? No. Do I love Fever? No. But despite all that, I have no doubt, this album will catapult BFMV to the stratosphere of exactly where they want to be; Zinging up the charts, into the Top 10 and out of the clutches of just the emo kiddies.
